Save Money On Utility Bills
If you have ever picked up a magazine that promised "10 Ways to Cut Your Bills in Half!" you've noticed that these ideas are usually big, expensive projects, like installing solar panels or replacing all your windows and siding. Especially in this economy, these projects are out of the question, but there are some easy tricks that will save you money, and you don't need a contractor to get them done.
Use the "Off" Button
When you're not using an appliance, turn it off. DVD players and stereos are often left on constantly, which wastes electricity and costs money. Unplug your cell phone charger when it's not in use, because even if it's not charging something it's still drawing electricity. And, of course, turn off the lights when you leave a room.
Seal Up Your Windows
You don't need to buy brand new Energy Star windows to save on heating bills. Buy the plastic window sealers that cover your windows in the winter and keep heat from escaping. Buy new door sweeps to keep heat from escaping under doors.
Stay Cool Without the A/C
To save money on cooling during the summer, leave your windows open at night, and shut them in the morning to trap cool air in your house and keep your A/C from running constantly. If you have some patience, plant trees near your house that will provide shade - well shaded houses don't even need air conditioners.
Pay Less For Heating
You don't need to install a brand new furnace or invest in extra insulation to cut your heating bills - just turn your thermostat down, and buy fleece house slippers. You'll barely notice the difference and you'll save 1% on your bill for every degree you turn down your thermostat. Also, be sure that the doors and vents are closed to unused room, and keep closet doors shut, too. Depending on the size of your home, these tips can save you up to $50 a month.
Outsmart Your Washing Machine
Washing your clothes in warm water and drying them for an hour is the tried-and-true method for laundry day, but is racking up your electricity bill. Washing your cloths in cold water will get them just as clean, will save you money, and won't make some of your items shrink. Line drying clothes is the most economical, but not practical for some people. To cut your drying time, throw a towel in with a load of heavy clothes. It will absorb water and help dry things faster.
Summary
You'll see a difference in your utility bills after using these quick tips. You can even cut your living expenses further by clipping coupons or canceling your landline and using only your cell phone. Small changes will make a big difference in your expenses.
