How to make money with knol
Tips and tricks to improve adsense revenue in knolsTopic, structure, and visibility are the most important parameters that should be carefully considered in order to get significant revenue from knols. In this knol, we are analyzing each method, and give examples and suggestions.
A few words on adsense
Adsense is not considered the best way to make advertisement revenue on-line. It is definitely though one of the easiest and simplest methods, and this has gained it its popularity. It features a black box logic, and it shares a publisher's revenues with Google. When a visitor opens a page an instant auction chooses if your ads are going to be CPM or CPC. Both can be as low as $.01 and climb to even more than $5. These numbers are not clearly known. In general the more clicks and visitors you have the higher CPM and CPC ads you can expect to have in your site. Unfortunately, this is the only advertising platform one can use with knols. Moreover the position chosen initially from the designers (one block of ads on the right side of the page) of knol did not optimize the Click Through Ratio (CTR) of the page. This changed, and ads are currently shown also at the bottom of the page which has been seen to increase CTR of knols. Still, discussion on this issue will continue. Topic
Choosing an article to write about is possibly the most important task. One should write an article for a topic she/he is well aware but expects to get greater attention. It does not need to be very simplified. For example an article about programming might be very advanced but receive great attention in the programmers community. That's all you need to get. And you know what? If you succeed in getting attention from specialized groups then you have more chances to get more clicks, since the ads will be more relevant to their interests, which in turn will boost your revenue.Choosing your article is not though as straightforward. Sex, humor, and money are the things that interest more all people around the globe. If you are talking about these make sure you write a good article otherwise your article will just have some initial visitors and then it will simply die out. Still the major choise is if you want to write something for everybody or just something for few. Choosing only depends on your personal goals. Popular topics have immense competition, where as in the not-so-popular topics it is easy to climb on the top of google's search.
Even though I would recommend writing a good authoritative article, there is always the winning-at-all-costs (Soviet Style) approach. In principle, you can always copy paste from other article sources on-line, but beware that this will show up in your knol (as "similar content on the web") and this will impair your ability to climb up a google search. You can also write offensive articles, or sexually explicit, but here lies a thin line between getting flagged by other users, so you should be careful. Being stupid or weird may generate some extra traffic but everything comes out to sustainability. Internet has proven that easy-going topics such as sex, humor, and money can sometime be profitable. It has proven that "jackass" type content can also be extremely popular. Again, this one is your choice.
Structure
Take a good look at your knol after you finish it. Does it look inviting? You can always import a word file you found somewhere on the net and wait to get ad revenues, but believe me it will not work this way. You need to carefully edit the knol, make it meet the structure standards. You could start using an existing knol as a template. Put headings of several layers. Put some external and knol links at the end of the pages. Put some pictures to illustrate your point better. Choose the caption of the picture carefully. Edit your language multiple times. It should be clear and very specific. Remember that an unprofessional knol structure might impair your ratings and shrink your visibility.Visibility
This is the most important parameter to get your knol ad revenue started. Upon creating your knol you should try to make it as visible as you can to the outside internet. Major search engines (google, yahoo, live) feature a url submission service. You can submit your url there with some comments to improve its ranking upon specific searches.Then, try to "link-link-link". Try to see if your knol is important to link it through a wikipedia page. Do not forget to put the links in your website. Ask your friends to link to your site. There might be various forums that could be interested in what you say, so do not forget to send them your staff. This way your knol will become visible and have a good ranking in major search engines. There are services that link to your site for a fee to increase your visibility and ranking on search engines results.
Try to use your social contacts. Many friends of yours might be interested initially more than others to what you have to say. You can e-mail your friends with any piece you find interesting. In facebook, linking your status to your knols will give you for a couple of days a lot of clicks. Do not forget to post it permanently on your posted items in facebook. Link your work from hi5 and myspace. Finally, social bookmarking sites could also be very useful since major search engines crawl their data very often.
Knol networking finally is extremely important. After all knol is a community of users that can be vastly more interested to reading knols than anybody else. Read other peoples' articles, write comments, and rate other people. Write reviews if you are aware of the authoritative subject the writer is talking about. Also, invite people to be co-authors to your knols. Doubling the authors, could mean double the visitors, and double the clicks. And, since the revenues from CPC ads are non linear, but improve according the number of clicks, this would mean more money even if you are sharing the ad-revenues with your co-author. Finally, do not forget to edit your knol. Knol adds rewards all the newly edited articles by adding them to the "What's new" tab of its home site. This way it makes authors to revisit and reedit their articles, and improve them. The visibility you get this way is significant but only lasts for a few minutes, until others edit their articles, or create new ones.
Click fraud
Many people use automated bots to click their ads in order to make (illegal) profit. This action is referred to as click fraud - if you practice it, you are going to get caught. Google tries its best to detect click fraud, so you are strongly advised not to use them. There are though various software that should be able to click automatically in your ads (e.g. Autoclick or Auroclicker) as shown in Figure 2. Also, there are mozilla add-ons that could allow someone to record macros that could perform clicks on someone's ads.
